SACRAMENTO REGION, CA (MPG) - “Leave the ladders to us,” says Chris Anderson, owner of Student Services in Roseville. “From professionally trained and friendly technicians to industry-leading equipment — we’re bringing exterior house cleaning to new heights,” Anderson said.

Anderson’s company, Student Services, which he said is rebranding this summer to do business as Home Heroes, is rapidly climbing the ladder to success. His geographic service area extends north to south from Roseville to Elk Grove and includes Natomas and Citrus Heights.

Six years ago, Anderson was an 18-year-old Sierra College freshman, desperate to pay for his college education. No more.

“I was so desperate that I started cleaning garbage cans with a pressure washer I had by going door-to-door in Sun City Roseville, a 55+ active living retirement community,” he said. Anderson saw that residents were willing to pay for someone to clean their gutters, windows and solar panels and put up and take down their Christmas lights.

“I thought, I can get a ladder and do those things too.” He did and found no shortage of work.

Anderson transferred from Sierra College and graduated from U.C. Santa Barbara in 2018, debt free. He decided to return home to Roseville to expand his business into new 55+ residential communities throughout the area, tapping into resources including the Small Business Development Center, Sacramento Entrepreneurship Academy, StartupSac, and HaneyBiz to obtain practical new business advice.

Utilizing these free or low-cost business development resources, Anderson welcomed professional coaching and business connections which nurtured his entrepreneurial bug. Since 2019, his first full year in business, his company, Student Services grew 280 percent and is set to double that pace by the end of 2021.

“Much of the specific services we provide are ladder-related, because for the adult senior market, getting up on a ladder to do something around the house is likely the last thing they want to do,” Anderson said. “The catch is, they often need a ladder in order to do their home maintenance and often don’t have one.”

“The mission of Home Heroes will be to come to the rescue of homeowners,” Anderson said. “We help provide maintenance for their residential property so they can maintain the level of personal independence in the place they truly love the most.”

Many of the 20 different planned 55+ senior residential communities in the greater Roseville area were built on specific single story floor plan models. Pricing is based on the physical model of the residence and on the level of cleaning detail the customer may require, Anderson said.

Anderson said he cherishes the relationships which he’s built with his regular, older customers, many of whom are widowed, or live alone, providing a valuable service to them as well as companionship. Since his company involves ladder work, all his employees are covered by a general liability insurance policy and worker’s compensation when in the field, he said.

“We also use the latest cleaning technologies to ensure time-efficient, thorough, and safe services. Equipment such as water-fed poles and safety equipment like fall protection ensure that we complete our work safely with minimal ladder use,” he said.

Anderson encourages homeowners to stick to a regular exterior cleaning schedule. “After a long winter, all sorts of dirt, moss, and other nasty substances can collect on your roof, windows, and solar panels. Cleaning your gutters, windows, and solar panels regularly extends their life and adds curb appeal to your home,” he said.

“There’s plenty of work and we’re hiring additional employees,” Anderson said. “It’s hard to find applications right now, but we want to spread the word that we’re growing and actively adding staff.” His company has three college interns from the University of California system and a team of Sacramento State students who are helping with sales and marketing.
