Rams begin playoffs with win against Foothill

DIXON, CA (MPG) – The Dixon varsity football team bounced back this week with a 24-6 win against Foothill in the first round of the 2022 Division V CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Football Playoffs.

The No. 6 seed Rams (9-2) were coming off a 41-14 loss at Casa Roble in the Golden Empire League Championship game on October 28 in Orangevale. Foothill (6-5) entered the playoffs as the No. 11 seed.

Dixon led 17-0 at halftime and never looked back. Foothill scored its lone points of the game in the third quarter. The Rams added a touchdown in the fourth quarter and ultimately won by 18 points.

“That senior class can achieve anything it wants to if it can bring everybody with them,” Dixon coach Wes Bessighini told the Independent Voice following the loss at Casa Roble.

The Class of 2023 showed out for their head coach on Friday night. Senior quarterback Jett Harris completed 15-of-25 passes for 239 yards and two touchdowns. Harris also rushed four times for 26 yards.

Senior running back Braden Baumbach bruised his way to 22 carries for 129 yards and a touchdown, averaging nearly six yards a rush. Senior wide receiver Luis Torres caught six passes and racked up 138 total yards receiving.

Junior wide receiver Leo Iglesias represented the Class of 2024 with two receptions for 25 yards and a touchdown. Iglesias and senior free safety Brent Green each had an interception on defense.

Torres and senior cornerback Tristan Sanchez led the way with a team-high seven tackles each. Seniors, middle linebacker Matthew Whitaker and defensive tackle Seyyid Smith, followed closely behind with six, respectively. Whitaker had 2.5 tackles for loss and Smith had 1.5.

Dixon will now travel to Galt to play No. 3 seed Liberty Ranch (10-0) in the quarterfinals of the D5 section playoffs on Friday night at 7 p.m.
